Description from the publisher: The credo of cultural pluralism rests on two contradictory positions: on the one hand it recognises and respects pluralism of cultures and, on the other, it discourages systematic and substantive cultural comparisons. Bassam Tibi’s book is distinguished by the fact that it holds firmly to the first position: there is nothing essentially lacking in islamic culture preventing the non-industrial Middle East and North Africa from achieving parity with the industrial West. The second position is rejected out of hand by the author. For him, it is obvious that the same intellectual tradition from which the contemporary cultural-pluralistic credo of the equality of cultures stems also provides us with standards to compare the different cultures to each other.
